Following your Heart vs Following People

Follow your heart

I recently had a life-changing conversation. It was with a (very) elderly lady whom I am close with, & who is aware of & open about the fact that she is nearing the end of her time in this body.

I asked her this: “Is there anything you would do differently if you could have your time over?” “Yes!” She immediately answered. “I would follow my heart instead of following people. I would be courageous enough to make the decisions I felt were right for me, instead of being so concerned with what others thought of me. I would be true to myself first & foremost.” .

A Nurse who spent several years working in palliative care, caring for patients in the last 12 weeks of their lives, recorded the ‘5 regrets of the Dying.’
The number 1 regret was this: “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”.

This life is a gift. Each of us has been given a unique call to live & path to walk. May we reach the end of our days & look back knowing we had the courage to be true to ourselves & live the life we were created to live.
