There are 2 powerful energies at work within us – Love and Fear.
At any time, we have the choice which energy we allow ourselves to live from.
When we live from love, we are in a place of rest, peace, joy… Our minds are still, steady, and calm.
When we live from fear, we are in a place of worry, stress, anxiety… Our minds are clouded and full of thoughts of past and future.
Here are some of the effects of fear:
Fear weakens the immune system,
can cause cardiovascular damage,
can cause damage to certain parts of the brain,
causes gastrointestinal issues such as ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome,
leads to premature ageing,
interrupts processes in our brains that help to regulate emotions, reflect before acting and make ethical decisions,
impacts our decision making in negative ways,
leaves us susceptible to intense emotions and impulse reactions (such as hoarding toilet paper!),
causes fatigue, anger and depression.
I don’t know about you, but I do not want or need these things in my life!
So, how do we guard our hearts from the fear?
The answer is simple, yet profound: Don’t identify with it.
Fear generally comes about through thoughts of what might happen, not something that is actually happening now. You have left the present moment (the only thing that truly exists!) to explore an imagined future. This creates fear. You can always cope with the present moment, but you cannot cope with something that is only a mind projection – you cannot cope with the future. At this time, fear will come. This is normal, natural. Let it come.
It can come in various forms, such as worry, anxiety, nervousness, tension, dread… When you begin to notice these feeling arise- STOP. PAUSE. BREATHE.
Give yourself enough time and space to notice it, feel it, and disconnect yourself from it.
You are not the fear. The fear is not inherent within you. How can I say this? Because if you give yourself enough time and space to disconnect from it, you will soon see that you can see it. And you cannot be what you can see. You are the Observer, the Witness, the still and unmoving place behind all thoughts and feelings.
Thoughts and feelings come and go. But who you truly are neither comes nor goes.
Thoughts and feelings are like clouds, waves, pictures projected upon a screen.
You are the sky, the ocean, the screen itself. Untouched, unmoving. SAFE.
At this time, create space enough to separate yourself from these troubling thoughts and feelings. This is the kindest thing you can do for yourself, your family and the world around you. It will bring health in every part of who you are. It will bring strength, peace and clarity of mind. All the things we need right now.
